On August 26, a mudslide destroyed Gyirong Port on the Tibet-Nepal border — the primary land crossing between Nepal and China, through which the majority of Nepal’s overland trade with China transits. The broader Nepal floods have left more than 1,500 people missing; Nepal’s army is conducting rescue operations at a flooded hydropower tunnel in a previously inaccessible region. Gyirong Port was destroyed. It has been destroyed before.

The 2015 Gorkha earthquake collapsed the original Friendship Bridge crossing at Zhangmu (Kodari), severing the primary Tibet-Nepal land route. China and Nepal rebuilt it as Gyirong Port, investing substantially in new road infrastructure on the Tibetan side as part of the Belt and Road Initiative’s Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network. Gyirong handled approximately $1.5 billion in annual bilateral trade before August 26. Established It is now again destroyed by a geophysical event.

The Structural Pattern

The destruction of Gyirong Port twice in eleven years is not a statistical anomaly. It is a structural feature of the geography. The Tibet-Nepal border sits at elevations above 3,000 metres in an active seismic zone where accelerating glacial melt is increasing the frequency and volume of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and debris flows. The monsoon intensification documented by the World Meteorological Organisation across the Himalayan arc since 2018 has extended the high-risk window for these events. Infrastructure built at this altitude, in this geology, cannot be insured against these risks at the same cost as infrastructure built in stable lowland terrain.

Nepal’s trade alternatives to Gyirong are structurally inadequate at volume. Air cargo between Kathmandu and Chinese cities is not a substitute for bulk overland trade in goods such as construction materials, consumer goods, and agricultural products. The southern land route through India — Nepal’s other primary trade corridor — is subject to political friction that has historically made it unreliable during periods of India-Nepal tension. Nepal is, in a structural sense, caught between two corridor dependencies, each of which carries a category of risk the other does not.

The BRI Dimension

China has committed to the Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network as a flagship BRI project, including a proposed railway from Shigatse to Kathmandu. The railway has not broken ground. The port that precedes it — Gyirong — has now been destroyed twice. The investment calculus for building a railway through terrain where the existing road port has twice been destroyed by natural events within a decade is not straightforward. Assessed

The immediate priority is humanitarian. Nepal’s army has reached previously inaccessible areas; the missing include workers at the hydropower tunnel and residents of flood-affected villages whose evacuation routes were cut. The structural question — whether and how Nepal rebuilds its primary Chinese trade corridor for the third time in a region of increasing climate instability — is a question for the coming months. It is not a question that has a straightforward engineering answer.
